Questions about the Trinity: Broadcast

Stephen to Joel: Is the doctrine of the Trinity important?

Yes, for three reasons:

  • The Bible forbids idolatry, and calls worshipping any God except the Creator idolatry.
  • Our salvation is all a work of God, not a work of the gods
    • The Father planned and initiated our salvation.
    • The Son provided the full payment for our salvation.
    • The Spirit calls us to faith through the gospel, places us into Christ, seals us as God’s possession, indwells us as a down payment guaranteeing our final salvation, and sanctifies us, perfecting holiness in us.
  • We cannot be saved if we reject who Christ is. John 8:24 If you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.

Stephen to Eric: Is the word Trinity in the Bible?

No and neither are the words: Omniscient, Omnipotent, Providence, Sovereignty, yet they are very Biblical terms.  The word is a term used to describe the Biblical teaching that God is both one in essence or being a three in person at the same time.

Stephen to Victor: What do we mean by Trinity?

  • God is three persons.
  • Each person is fully God.
  • There is only one God.

Stephen to Joel: Where is the doctrine of the Trinity found in the Bible?

We see the concept of one God who exists in more than one person in both the Old and New Testaments.

Stephen to Joel: Where do we find this doctrine in the Old Testament?

  • There is only one God: Deuteronomy 6:4 The LORD our God is one LORD: Exodus 20:3 You shall have no other gods before Me.  Isaiah 46:9 I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me.
  • God is referred to in the plural: Genesis 1:26 God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness. Genesis 3:22 The LORD God said, man has become like one of Us. Genesis 11:7 Let Us go down and confuse their language. Isaiah 6:8 Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?
  • There is a distinction between Father and Son: Malachi 3:1 I send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, Will suddenly come to His temple, says the LORD of hosts.
  • Distinction between Father, Son, and Spirit: Isaiah 48:16 I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; From the time that it was, I was there. And now the Lord GOD and His Spirit Have sent Me.  Hosea 1:7 I will have mercy on the house of Judah, will save them by the LORD their God.

Stephen to Eric: Where do we find this doctrine in the New Testament?

  • There is only one God: 1 Corinthians 8:4-6 We know that an idol is nothing and that there is no other God but one.  For even if there are so-called gods, yet for us there is one God, the Father, and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things. James 2:19 You believe that there is one God. You do well!
  • There is one God, yet three distinct persons: Ephesians 4:4-6 There is one Spirit, one Lord, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
  • Unity and distinction of person are presented in the same passage: John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God…the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
  • The three person of the Godhead as mentioned as a unity together in many passages: Matthew 28:19 Baptize in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 3:16-17 Christ’s baptism all three persons are clearly present. 2 Corinthians 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Stephen to Joel: Are the Father, Son, and Spirit ever called God?

All three persons are called God and presented with characteristics that only God can have.

    • Father: 1 Peter 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.
    • Spirit: Acts 5:4 You have not lied to men but to God.
    • Son: Titus 2:13 Looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.
      • Omniscience Matthew 9:4, 1 Corinthians 2:10
      • Omnipotence: Matthew 28:18
      • Omnipresence: Matthew 28:18; 1 Corinthians 6:19
      • Forgiveness of sins: Mark 2
      • Regeneration: John 3:5-6
      • Creation and providence: John 1:1, 3; Colossians 1:17; John 5:27

Stephen to Victor: What are your concluding thoughts?

  • If we are going to be saved, from sin and eternal death, we must first receive what the bible says about Jesus. He is God in flesh and should be worshipped as God and trusted without any rival.
  • Since the Bible is clear about God’s nature as three in one, we as Christians should be willing to defend this doctrine just like any other doctrine in the Bible.
